In practical application, the power NTC thermistor shall work within the rated operating temperature range as far as possible. If the temperature exceeds the specified upper and lower limits, it may cause the power NTC product to malfunction or damage.
• Be careful not to let it work in a humid environment, because excessive humidity will accelerate the aging of power NTC thermistors.
• Since the power NTC thermistor is greatly affected by the ambient temperature, the product specification generally gives the maximum steady-state current at room temperature (0~25 ℃).
• Some power NTC thermistors of foreign brands give the maximum steady state current of 0~65 ℃, which is more consistent with the actual use of the product.
• The maximum current derating curve of power NTC thermistor is shown in the figure below. The rated current will be linearly derated to zero at the highest or lowest operating temperature.
• The application conditions of power NTC thermistor products are not normal temperature (0-25 ℃), or due to the design or structure of the product itself, such as power supply and some devices with high heat. When the ambient temperature is too high or too low, it must be derated according to the current reduction curve.
NTC thermistor has small volume and large power. The NTC thermistor used in the power supply circuit is mainly used to restrain the surge current, which is generally connected in series with the mains power input. It has rated zero power resistance value. When connected in series in the power circuit, the starting surge current can be effectively suppressed, and the power consumption is almost negligible. Generally, when the switching power supply is turned on, there will be a peak surge current to charge the filter capacitor, thus charging the equipment. These surge currents will affect the service life of the capacitor, damage the contact of the power switch or damage the rectifier diode. Therefore, it is necessary to take corresponding measures.
