The loading potentiometer is a three-terminal resistor with sliding or rotating contacts that form an adjustable voltage divider. If only two terminals are used (one end and the wiper) it acts as a variable resistor or varistor.
The higher or lower the resistance connected to the load, the greater or lesser the loading effect on the wiper. So a load resistance in the megohm range will have very little effect compared to a value of just a few ohms. So, to get the output voltage back to its original 6 volts, a small adjustment to the potentiometer wiper position (18o in this case) is required, since now RT equals 1250Ω (500+750).
The sliding rheostat is a circuit element, which can change its own resistance by changing its own resistance, thus playing the role of controlling the circuit. In circuit analysis, the sliding rheostat can be used as a fixed-value resistor or a variable-value resistor. The composition of the sliding varistor generally includes five parts: the terminal, the sliding piece, the resistance wire, the metal rod and the porcelain cylinder. The resistance wire of the sliding varistor is wound on the insulating porcelain cylinder, and the outer surface of the resistance wire is coated with insulating paint.
A varistor is a double-ended variable resistor configured to use only one end terminal and wiper terminal. Unused terminals can be left unattached or attached directly to the cursor. They are wire-wound devices that contain tight coils of heavy-duty enameled wire that change resistance in step-like increments. By changing the position of the wiper on the resistive element, the amount of resistance can be increased or decreased, thereby controlling the amount of current.
The purpose of the loading potentiometer and the sliding rheostat is the same, but there are some differences in the occasions. The potentiometer is mainly adjusted to change the size of the current by adjusting the size of the resistance, mainly to visually display the current value and the resistor ( Also known as resistance box) is mainly to display the resistance size.
The potentiometer is very accurate, it can continuously change the resistance 1-9999, while the varistor cannot change continuously, and the accuracy is not high. Potentiometers are generally used for occasions with high accuracy of resistance, while rheostats are generally used for current limiting, changing voltage, and current.
