Symptoms of coolant temperature switch (temperature sensor) malfunction or failure.Human motion sensing module

source:Industry News release time:2023-07-19 Hits:     Popular:Infrared sensing module

The coolant temperature sensor, also known as the coolant temperature switch, is an engine management system sensor used to monitor the temperature of the engine coolant. Most coolant temperature sensors use resistance to measure the temperature of the coolant. Then, the signal is sent to the computer so that the timing and fuel calculation of the engine can be changed to achieve optimal performance, as the engine requires more fuel during cooling and less fuel during full preheating. If the engine temperature is found to be too high, the computer will also reduce the engine performance settings to protect the engine from possible damage caused by overheating.

Due to the crucial role of temperature in engine performance calculations, any issue with the coolant temperature sensor can quickly transform into an engine performance issue. Usually, problems with the coolant temperature sensor can cause some symptoms, reminding drivers to thoroughly check for potential issues.

      1. Poor fuel economy

One of the initial symptoms related to coolant temperature sensor issues is poor fuel economy. If the coolant temperature sensor deteriorates, it may send an error signal to the computer and lose fuel and time calculations. It is not uncommon for the coolant temperature sensor to malfunction and send a permanent cold signal to the computer. This will lead the computer to believe that the engine is cold, even if it is not, and therefore will use more fuel than necessary. This will reduce fuel economy and may hinder engine performance.

      Black smoke from the engine

Another symptom of possible issues with the coolant temperature sensor is black smoke from the vehicle exhaust. If the coolant temperature sensor malfunctions and sends a cold signal to the computer, it may confuse the computer and cause it to unnecessarily enrich the fuel mixture. If the fuel mixture becomes too rich and the fuel cannot fully burn in the combustion chamber, it will burn in the exhaust pipe and cause black smoke. In severe cases, black smoke may be sufficient to prevent driving the vehicle.

      3. Engine overheating

Another symptom of coolant temperature sensor issues is overheating of the engine. The coolant temperature sensor may also malfunction in a way that causes it to send a permanent thermal signal. This may cause the computer to incorrectly compensate for the tilt signal, which may lead to overheating, even causing a fire or engine ping
