Like the resolver, the infrared (IR) torque sensor uses a non-contact method to retrieve the torque signal from the rotating sensor back to the fixed world. Similarly, using resolver coupling, power is transmitted to the rotation sensor. However, instead of being used directly to excite the strain gauge bridge, it can be used to power a rotating sensor. This circuit provides the excitation voltage to the strain gauge bridge of the sensor and digitizes the output signal of the sensor.

The digital output signal is then sent via infrared to a fixed receiving diode, where another circuit checks the error of the digital signal and converts it back to an analog voltage. Because the output of the sensor is a digital signal, it is less susceptible to noise sources such as motors and magnetic fields. Unlike resolver systems, infrared transducers can be configured with or without bearings, which is truly maintenance-free, wear-free, and does not require towing sensors.

Although much more expensive than the simple slip ring method, it has several advantages.

When the bearing is not installed, as a true non-contact measurement system, there are no wear parts, making it ideally suitable for long-term testing equipment. More importantly, since no bearings are required, the working speed (maximum rotation speed) is greatly improved, reaching a maximum rotation speed of over 25,000, even for sensors with high torque. For high-speed applications, this is often the best solution for rotating torque transmission.
