What terminology do we use to describe FIR filters?

　　* Impulse response - The impulse response of the FIR filter is actually the FIR coefficient.

　　* Tap (tap) - The tap of an FIR is a coefficient or delay pair. The number of FIR taps (usually denoted by N) means :1) the amount of memory needed to implement the filter, 2) the number of computations needed, 3) the amount the filter can filter out, in fact, more taps means more stopband attenuation, fewer ripples, narrower filtering, etc.

　　* Multiply accumulation (MAC) - In FIR terms,MAC means to multiply the time-delayed data samples with the corresponding coefficients, and then add up the results. Typically, a MAC is required for each tap of an FIR. Most DSP microprocessors implement MAC operations in a single instruction cycle.

　　* TransiTIon Band - the band of frequencies between the edge of the passband and the stopband. The narrower the transition band, the more taps are needed to implement the filter. It is also said that the small transition band is a sharp filter.

　　* Delay line - a set of memory units that implement Z^-1 delay in FIR computation.

　　* Ring cache - A special cache that is end to end. It is usually implemented by DSP microprocessor.
