      With the advancement of FTTx, on the one hand, traditional dedicated line services have also faced a dilemma with the withdrawal of ATM switches. A large number of dedicated line services need to be accessed with high-quality and guaranteed quality. If access is built separately to carry this service, it will bring a huge burden to operators; On the other hand, traditional DSLAM mode business configuration mainly adopts VLAN configuration, which is limited by the number of VLAN ID identifiers (4K), which limits the development and planning of new businesses; And because new business development typically spans the entire network, there is a lot of cross departmental operational work, resulting in low efficiency in business development and distribution. Therefore, the industry has proposed the idea of introducing MPLS technology into the access layer.

      The value of MPLS in wide area networks has been confirmed, as it simplifies the processing of data packets and improves the forwarding efficiency of data packets; MPLS based traffic engineering and fast routing protection technologies have improved network QoS. With the flattening of the structure of the Metropolitan area network and the moving up of the OLT position, MPLS is expanding from WAN to MAN and access network. At present, Metropolitan area network is evolving from TDM/ATM network architecture to Ethernet network architecture. The adoption of MPLS technology in the Metropolitan area network and access network based on Ethernet will become a trend.

      At present, operators such as Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom have requested that OLT equipment can support this function in the future. Huawei first demonstrated its solution to support MPLS on OLT at the global MPLS forum held earlier, and simultaneously passed the interoperability test of the international authoritative testing agency EANTC. It has become the only OLT solution in this field that has passed this test, and has successfully launched this feature on operators such as Accor in Germany.

      However, some experts also point out that MPLS protocols are more complex than traditional Layer 2 access, so device manufacturers are required to have a full understanding of routing protocols. For example, MPLS itself has a large number of protocols, which do not necessarily all need to be implemented at the access layer, as long as some of them are selected. From a device perspective, MPLS has significantly improved its performance requirements for access devices, as well as its management capabilities. From a cost perspective, access layer MPLS will bring about an increase in equipment costs. Therefore, the current demand for it is mainly focused on developed countries that are more concerned about operational efficiency, helping them reduce OPEX. However, from a long-term perspective, the access layer MPLS is a major direction for future product development.
