　　An NTC thermistor is a temperature-dependent resistor using a special semiconductor ceramic with a negative temperature coefficient (NTC). They have high resistance at room temperature, and when they are energized, they generate heat themselves, and as the temperature increases, the resistance decreases. Because of this characteristic, they are used as current protection devices for electrical and electronic equipment, conveniently and effectively limiting abnormal currents, including magnetizing inrush currents when energized. The NTC thermistor used as a current protection device is also called a power thermistor.

　　Fixed resistors or NTC thermistors can be used to limit the magnetizing inrush current. However, fixed resistance always results in power loss and performance degradation. The NTC thermistor limits the magnetizing inrush current with its higher initial resistance, then the temperature rises due to energization and the resistance drops to a few percent of the room temperature level, resulting in lower power losses than using a fixed resistor. In other words, limiting the magnetizing inrush current with an NTC thermistor is more effective than using a fixed resistor with the same initial power loss.
